DOLA is pleased to announce the award of four grants in their Broadband Program funded by the Energy Mineral Impact Fund in March 2022:
Region 10/Hinsdale County/Lake City: $300,000
The funding will enable Region 10 to fund a 20-year irrevocable right of use (IRU) from Mammoth Networks. The project will connect 15 or more community anchor institutions, including City and County buildings, the Lake City Medical Center, several schools and daycares, the library and the armory building. The project will also include an investment to the existing meet-me location operated by Mammoth Networks.
Northwest Colorado Council of Governments (NWCCOG) Project THOR Backbone Enhancement: $2,195,758
The NWCCOG will lease 4 strands of fiber from Zayo Group and from the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT). Routes include:
- Zayo Group: from 6th Ave to 910 15th Street in Denver, for a period of 10 years
- CDOT: from 6th Ave in Denver to Glenwood Springs, for a period of 10 years.
Additionally, the Grantee will purchase software upgrades to improve the delivery of broadband services along the THOR network from Denver to Glenwood Springs.
Region 10 Broadband Expansion $3,982,600
Region 10 will enter into three IRU agreements to extend fiber optic service to Fruita, Nucla, and Cortez, by way of Grand Junction. Optical and router equipment will be purchased and installed to “light” the system. Consulting services will be utilized to ensure the proper installation of the equipment.
Snowmass Village Network Partnership Phase II $744,296
The Town will work with a previously engaged engineer to design the western extension of the fiber optic network. The work will involve burying fiber optic cable to connect the Town’s housing offices, proposed transit center, Snowmass Mall, Skittles Gondola and the Base Village. Each location will be a community anchor institution.
In addition to these awards, there are currently applications for laterals along I-70 for the towns of New Castle, Silt, Parachute, Palisade and Fruita, work by Garfield County for additional middle-mile and carrier neutral locations, and upgrades to the network in and around Pagosa Springs.
